HOW does a BOOK become a CLASSIC?

A short query:

The 112th book I just posted is from suspense thriller writer Harlan Coben- Tell No One. This was my very first Coben book. I found the book while I was browsing in the, would you believe, Classic section of my local library, considered one of the top libraries in the state of Michigan. I also found a lot of books from my list such as The Book Thief, The Thirteenth Tale, The Handmaid's Tale and Bel Canto to name a few. I inquired why, and maybe this is news to only me, but apparently, the librarian informed me that they do add contemporary books to this section all the time: books that are the most frequently borrowed and requested by patrons, students and school teachers and which also garnered considerably good literary review. I wonder if this is true of all libraries in US?
