Tattoos are getting to be the rage among women who like to be just as expressive of themselves as their male counterparts. While there are bold and prominent designs on men’s arms or chests, most women like to wear their female tattoo designs only on parts of their bodies they choose to draw attention to.

These could be the navel, ankles, hips, back, wrist and butt. Some women tattoo enthusiasts will have no qualms about wearing the "tramp stamp", usually found at their lower backs. There are a multitude of patterns women can choose from but the best-loved figures are the following:

• Butterflies and floral – these are very feminine figures that can be executed in a myriad of colors. Their natural beauty provides enough inspiration for tattoo artists who like to play with smooth lines and interesting shades. These designs may be drawn in countless of ways without losing their meaning or what they represent.

• Birds and feathers – feathers characterize delicacy and femininity while birds may symbolize freedom and ambitions. Peacock feather designs are popular for their richness and variety of colors. Doves are chosen for their simplicity and ease of execution.

• Moon and stars – the moon is a feminine symbol in itself; it makes for a good female tattoo design as well. Oftentimes, a tiny star may be drawn beside or around it.

• Chinese fans - they are just as multi-hued as flowers, butterflies, birds and feathers. Their intricate landscape or floral motifs are best appreciated when the fans are drawn spread out.

• Goddesses – these may be inspired by mythology characters, African art, or Asian goddesses.

A word of caution when choosing female tattoo designs – if you don’t desire drawing unsavory comments about your tattoos, get a design that is most pleasing to almost everyone in general. Some designs and their location have been known to get some wearers into trouble, such as those fearlessly wearing “tramp stamps” that have a negative connotation to some people.
