True to form, most Polynesian tattoo designs are quite large – many are meant to cover the entire arm, leg, or back. Although elements of Polynesian tattoos can be used to create smaller tattoo designs, the larger tattoos are certainly more impressive – and more attention-grabbing!
Before you decide on a tattoo, though, you’ll want to do a bit of research on Polynesian tattoo symbols. Don’t rely on your tattoo artist to tell you what the design means – you should have a clear concept of the symbolism of your tattoo before the first line is ever inked into your skin!
Most Polynesian tribal tattoo designs are meant only for black ink. This is because traditional Polynesian tattooing uses natural inks – colored inks are typically not available. If you want color in your Polynesian tattoo, you may have to work with your tattoo artist to create a custom design.
